New England Race Events was started in 2014 by Rich Mazzola who has been involved in the creation and promotion of endurance events for over 30 years. These events included running, cycling and multisport races. As an athlete himself, Rich always views his events from the eyes of the participant with the singular goal of creating a great event experience both for the athlete and the community that it impacts.
In 1999, he co-founded New England’s premier running relay – the Reach the Beach (RTB) Relay – a 200 mile running adventure that traverses the state of NH from the White Mountains to Hampton Beach. This race introduced the key concept of tapping into community organizations as a source of volunteers who would in turn become beneficiaries of the race. The results speak for themselves as Reach the Beach maintains a volunteer network of over 600 people and 20 non-profit organizations who benefit directly from the event each year.
In 2011, the RTB Relay franchise expanded with an event in Massachusetts. Rich designed the 200 mile relay course that led teams from Wachusett Mountain Ski area to Westport, MA finishing at DCR Horseneck Beach State Reservation. Struck by the remarkable beauty of this town, he decided to launch an additional event that provides a firsthand view of the rolling farmlands, vineyards, and endless water views that define Westport – the Horseneck Half Marathon & 3.5M.
In 2019, New England Race Events will take another big step forward by launching a great new event, the Midstate Massive Ultra Trail - a point to point trail race with distances of 100, 50 and 30 miles.
The idea the for Midstate Massive Ultra Trail (MMUT) was introduced to Rich by TMIRCE co-founder Andy Marx, based on inspiration from observing the Fastest Known Time (FKT) of a self-supported, 23 hour 43 minute traverse of the Midstate Trail by Greg Soutiea, Jake Dissinger and Chad Hornbaker in 2015. The Midstate Massive Ultra Trail 100M, 50M and 30M races will wind through the mountains, fields, roads and rivers of central Massachusetts, with border crossings in New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. You have three race options that will test your will to endure as you race, run and climb amidst the height of New England’s autumn. The Midstate Massive Ultra Trail is your doorway to adventure and discovery.
We hope you enjoy running one or all of our events and that they become part of your annual running calendar.
